If you’ve ever tried to change a faulty switch, socket or USB outlets and have found when you’re back at home that they don’t marry up with the mechanism supports that you have installed, it’s tiresome and you aren’t alone.

Every manufacturer, model and series has its own fixing system and aren’t normally compatible with each other. They have their own supports or chassis and their own faceplates as well as different shaped back boxes.

Here’s a few of the most typical back boxes found in domestic and commercial properties in Spain.

• The Universal Plasterboard Box (1) as well as the Recessed Universal Box (2) are practically the same style box, the UPB (1) comes in 2, 4, 6 & 8 way boxes where it’s possible to install upto 4 socket outlets or 8 narrow switches (8 Gang switching). The recessed box (2) joins together with its interlocking design creating the same set up as the Plasterboard version, the recessed box is to be installed within the fabric of the building.

• Above are the different sized Universal plasterboard boxes – Better quality and are available in 2,4,6,& 8 Gang.

• Above is the 503 box (9) that allows for 1, 2 or 3 Gang switching and the 504 (10) allows for 4 Gang.
• These type of boxes aren’t generally used throughout Spain but are commonly used in the Canary Islands.
• Over time both boxes can become brittle and break very easy and are a pain to repair.
• NOTE : The majority of switches and sockets aren’t available for these style of boxes and are mostly limited to the basic ranges.
